My country lying-In-State
The flute began whimpering
Among thundering drums….
“Who
shall restore the dignity of man?
One
man, one vote they told us,
One
man many votes were the count.
Build
property anywhere you like they told us,
But
everywhere they burn our property.
Keep
your own God they told us,
But
they murder us for the sake of our God.
We
are all equal before the law they told us.
But
lawless leaders gag the mouth the law.
A
pregnant goat is giving birth on tether….
And
our only meal for the night got burnt.
Who
raped the maiden?
Our
daughter, our sister…who raped her?
Lying-in-state,
she lay.
We
shall not bury,
We
shall bury not,
Until
the dignity of man is restored.”
The
flute hung on his for a while.
He
cleaned his running nose with backhand.
His
weeping eyes swooping pendulously
At
shadows of gluttonous sycophants
Filing
pass the restless dead.
