Madam Minister: At Breakfast

Ndi, Kate, Isabel, Nene, and Dr. Soso Monteseri at Breakfast ( Part 7 )

The phone rang. She stretched, threw off the blankets, and grabbed it.
“How are you doing?”
“Still on bed. You woke me up.”
“Sorry, dear. I wanted to know you got home early.”
“Oh! Nice of you.”
“Seeing you today?”
She looked at the time on the dial.
“For good sake, Andrew. This is 7:20 a.m.”
“Oh! Good morning my royal highness.”
She laughed. Then said, “Tricky old fool.”
The UK diplomat laughed too.
“I better be,” he said.
“I will be at Sprite Mall, 9:30 a.m,” she said
“Meet you there, darling.”
“See you then, Andrew.”
She put the phone down, yawning and stretching. Then she pressed a button.
Ekaite came in.
“Good morning, Madam.”
“Good morning, Ekaite. Is the breakfast ready?”
“Yes, Madam.”
“Are the children up?”
“Yes, bathing, Madam.”
“Okay, I’m coming.”
“Yes, Madam,” said Ekaite. Then she hurried off to the kitchen.
“I prefer sun fry eggs,” said Ndi .
“Omelet taste better,” said Kate.
“Please, pass the sugar.”
Kate gave her the cubes pack.
“Take eggs, Soso,” said Kate.
Dr Monteseri shook his head.
“He likes bacon,” said Isabel. She came in, and sat down beside her dad.
He took her hands.
“Good morning, my dear. You look great, Icee.”
“Hi, Dad. Good morning, Mom. Good morning Aunt Kate.”
“My beautiful. Good morning,” said Kate.
Ndi smiled at her daughter. Their semblance is clear, she thought.
“Isabel, please stop wearing that dress,” she flayed.
She looked up swiftly at her mother. And smiled.
“Why mom,” she asked.
“It’s washed out. It’s short.”
Isabel chuckled. Everyone turned to her direction.
Then Nene and Chidi came in.
She ran to her mom. And hugged her.
“Nene my girl. Good morning.”
“Hi, mom.”
“How are you doing,” she said. Then she saw the bandages. “Oh, look at you! What happened to you?”
Kate was beside herself, seething with anger.
What a woman! Hasn’t she heard what happened to her daughter yet. This is stupid, she thought.
Dr monteseri shoved his breakfast away, got up, and walked out of the room. Kate threw off her napkin. And ran after him. she grabbed his arm by the laundry.
“What do think you are doing,” she asked. “This is your family. You can’t just walk away. What do think you are doing?”
He wrung his arm out of her grip.
“ What do you want me to do? To sit down there and listen to her.”
Kate was struck dumb. Everybody knew that Soso would come to this point. When he locked himself in the boys room, and kept away from people. We knew he would come this point…where …when he would hardly present…discuss and hold his views with an enlightened… distressed …wealthy woman, she thought, and flared up.
“You’re the man of the house. You are losing it. Everything! You are losing everything.”
He stood grumpily, staring at her, and saying nothing.
“Please, come back to the table. We need to talk about this issue together,” she assured, pulling him back to the dining room.
The children were having their meals. Ekaite was serving them. Ndi was not there.
Kate was startled, and speechless. Dr. Monteseri was smiling, and rubbing his fingers on his head. I’ ve told you. She is a sneaky creepy scheming monster , he thought.
“Where is your mom, Isabel,” asked Kate.
“I heard the car drive off.”
“Where? When”
Isabel shook her head. Her tea spoon clattered on the saucer. Then her knife sliced through cheese. She cut her sandwich. Then began to nibble it. Her face cold to what was happening.
